What is a Salary Calculator?
A salary calculator is an online tool that helps you estimate the take-home pay after mandatory deductions. With this tool, you can break down the basic pay, dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA), special incentives, and other elements of your salary.
It also accounts for common outflows such as professional tax, provident fund (PF), gratuity provisions, and income tax slabs. It also takes into account the home loan interest deduction for tax benefits.
This calculator provides an accurate figure of your monthly in-hand income, provided you input the required details correctly. With this tool, you can plan your monthly budget effectively, make informed financial decisions, and understand your tax liabilities.
What are the Components of the Salary Structure in India?
Employees can easily assess their take-home pay as well as tax liabilities by understanding the following components effectively:
1. Basic Salary
Basic salary is the foundation of the salary structure that usually comprises 40-50% of the total compensation. The basic salary is taxable, and it helps calculate other salary benefits like gratuity and provident fund contributions.
2. House Rent Allowance (HRA)
House Rent Allowance, as the name suggests, supports the rental expenses of those employees who live in rented homes. Based on salary level, actual rent paid, and city type (Metro or Non-metro), HRA is partially or fully exempt from tax under Section 10(13A). However, if an employee owns a home or does not pay any rent, HRA becomes fully taxable.
3. Leave Travel Allowance (LTA)
LTA reimburses travel expenses when the employees go on vacation and are eligible for tax exemption for domestic trips under Section 10(5). However, the travel should be in AC first-class rail or economy airfare and requires valid travel documents for claiming the deduction.
You can claim tax benefits for 2 out of 4 block years, with the current year block being 2022-2025. This deduction is only available under the old tax regime.

4. Special Allowance
Special Allowance covers uniforms, books, internet bills, and other miscellaneous needs. It is not like the targeted allowances, and is fully taxable, which fills gaps in standard reimbursements.
5. Bonus
As per the Payment of Bonus Act, bonuses are paid annually to reward the employee’s performance. These incentives motivate employees to exceed their targets, but they are fully taxable.
6. Employee Provident Fund (EPF)
EPF is a long-term investment account in which both the employee and employer contribute 12% of the basic salary plus dearness allowance. The employee's contribution is eligible for tax deductions of up to ₹1.5 Lakh under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act (under the old tax regime), while the tax exemption on the employer's contributions is within limits. EPF ensures that the employees get retirement corpus inclusive of compound interest.
7. Professional Tax
Professional tax is imposed by the state government on income from employment, which is capped at ₹2,500 per year. Professional tax is calculated based on slab rates that vary from one state to another. Employers deduct and remit professional tax directly.
8. Gratuity
Gratuity is payable as a lump sum upon retirement or resignation following a minimum of 5 consecutive years of service at one organisation, honouring loyalty. According to Section 10(10), private sector workers covered under the Payment of Gratuity Act are exempt from paying taxes on gratuity based on the lower of the following:
- ₹20 lakh
- Average salary of the last 10 months (basic + DA) * number of years of employment * 15/26
- Actual gratuity received
How Do Salary Calculators Work?
A salary calculator simplifies the calculation of your net take-home pay as per India’s standard tax rules. You need to enter the salary details, such as the annual gross salary that includes basic pay, allowances, HRA, and extras in the calculator. You also need to provide the details of your tax-saving investments like life insurance premiums, EPF, and home loan principal, plus the exemption portions, such as LTA or HRA.
The salary calculator subtracts the deductions and exemptions to calculate your taxable income. It then applies income tax slab rates, surcharges, and cess to calculate your tax liability. It also deducts contributions for professional tax and EPF from your gross pay. This way, your annual and monthly in-hand salary is calculated.
Formula For Salary Calculator
Salary calculator is an online tool that uses a specific formula to compute an employee’s net take-home salary. The salary calculator formula goes as follows:
Net Salary = Gross Salary – Taxable Income
Therefore, to calculate your net salary, you should know your gross salary first. However, you should know that your gross salary is not the CTC (cost to company) or your basic salary. You can get the gross salary by subtracting gratuity and EPF from your CTC.
Gross Salary = CTC – EPF – Gratuity
Once you have calculated your gross salary and taxable income, you can use the above formula to easily calculate your net salary.
Example of Salary Calculator
Let’s assume that your CTC (cost to company) is ₹9 lakh and you get a bonus of ₹50,000 from the employer during the financial year. So, your total gross salary will be ₹8,50,000 after deducting the bonus from the CTC, i.e., ₹9,00,000 - ₹50,000.
Gross Salary = ₹9,00,000 – ₹50,000 = ₹8,50,000
To calculate your take-home salary, you need to subtract the following deductions from your gross salary:
Therefore, Total Deductions = Professional tax + EPF (Employee’s Contribution) + EPF (Employer’s Contribution) + Employee’s Insurance.
Total Deductions = ₹2,500 + ₹21,600 + ₹21,600 + ₹3,000 = ₹48,700.
Take-Home Salary = Gross Pay – Total Deductions
Take-Home Salary = ₹8,50,000 – ₹48,700 = ₹8,01,300.
This table will help in a better understanding of the calculation:
Gross Salary = ₹9,00,000 – ₹50,000 = ₹8,50,000
To calculate your take-home salary, you need to subtract the following deductions from your gross salary:
- A professional tax of approximately ₹2,500 is deducted from your gross salary every year. Both the employer's and employee's EPF contributions are also deducted.
- The maximum salary cap for EPF contributions is ₹15,000 per month. It is equivalent to 12% of ₹15,000, or ₹1,800 per month, or ₹21,600 annually.
- Thus, the employee contributes ₹21,600 annually to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), and the employer contributes an equivalent amount of ₹21,600 (8.33% of the employer's contribution being diverted to the employee pension programme). Additionally, you can deduct ₹3,000 per year for employee insurance.
| Particulars | Amount (₹) |
|---|---|
| Gross Salary | 9,00,000 |
| Less: Deductions | Cell |
| Standard Deduction | 50,000 |
| Professional Tax | 2,500 |
| EPF (Employee Contribution) | 21,600 |
| EPF (Employer Contribution) | 21,600 |
| Employee Insurance | 3,000 |
| Total Deductions | 48,700 |
| Net Salary | 8,01,300 |
