                What is the Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund

                Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund is a passively managed equity fund that tracks the Nifty 500 Multifactor MQVLv 50 Index. So the portfolio of this fund will feature the same 50 stocks as the index being tracked. This way the fund will attempt to replicate the performance of the index being tracked as closely as possible within the margin of tracking error.

                The Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund features 50 stocks drawn from the broad-based Nifty 500 Index. These basket of stocks features the highest composite percentile score based on the 4 factors of momentum, quality, value and low volatility.

                The Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund is an equity fund, hence the fund has to mandatorily invest between 80-100% of assets in equities. The remainder of fund assets accounting for up to 20% of the investment portfolio can be invested in cash and money market instruments. Existing and new investors can invest in this fund through various Axis Max Life ULIP schemes such as Online Savings Plan, Flexi Wealth Advantage Plan, Smart Term with Additional Returns ULIP, etc.

                Performance of the Nifty 500 Multifactor MQvLv 50 Index

                Since the Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund is newly launched fund, there are no historical returns of this fund. However, since the fund is passively managed and designed to closely replicate the performance of the Nifty 500 Multifactor MQVLv 50 Index, the back-tested data of this index can serve as a surrogate for historical returns of the fund. The below table compares performance of this multifactor-index versus the parent Nifty 500 Index across various time periods as of 24th April 2025:

                As you can see from the above comparison, historically the multifactor index has outperformed the parent Nifty 500 Index by a significant margin in the short, medium and long-term. While there is no guarantee that the same level of outperformance will be maintained in the future, the Nifty 500 Multifactor MQVLv 50 Index would continue to have the potential to outperform its parent index in the future too. That said, prospective Axis Max Life ULIP policy holders should keep in mind that this equity fund does carry significant investment risk like any other market linked equity investment options.

                Stock Picking Methodology of the Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund

                Since the Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund will mirror the Nifty 500 Multifactor MQVLv 50 Index, the fund portfolio will feature the same 50 stocks as the index, so the stock picking methodology for this fund is exactly the same as the index it is replicating. Below are the key steps involved in the stock picking process of this index:

                Step 1: Stock Universe and Exclusion Criteria

                The Nifty 500 Index is used as the stock universe for this index, so any company that is not part of the Nifty 500 is automatically disqualified. Additional exclusion criteria used as part of the stock selection criteria includes:

                • Stocks that have a listing history of less than 1 year
                • Stocks that have ranked in bottom 10 percentile scores based on ADT (average daily turnover)
                • Stocks that have ranked in bottom 10 percentile scores based on turnover ratio
                • Stocks of companies where pledged promoter holdings exceed 20%
                • Non-member stocks that are not available for Futures and Options (F&O) trades and have hit the upper/lower circuit at least 20% of the total number trading days in the past 6 months

                Step 2: Factor Based Initial Selection

                Once an initial list of stocks has been obtained from the Nifty 500 Index based on the above exclusion criteria, the next step is the calculation of percentile score of each stock based on the 4 factors – momentum, quality, value and low volatility. Below is a brief description of what each factor signifies:

                1) Momentum – The momentum score of each stock is calculated on the basis of 6-months and 12-months price returns adjusted for volatility. The top 25 stocks with the highest percentile momentum score are selected for the next step of the selection process.

                2) Quality – The quality score of each eligible stock is determined on the basis of financial leverage (debt/equity ratio), return on equity (RoE) and earnings per share (EPS) growth variability over the past 5 years. The 25 stocks that have the highest percentile quality score are selected for further evaluation.

                3) Value – Value score of individual stocks are calculated using dividend yield, sales to price (S/P) ratio, Book Value to Price (B/P) ratio, and Earnings to Price (E/P) ratio. The 25 stocks with the highest percentile value score are selected for further evaluation.

                4) Low Volatility – Low Volatility score of eligible stocks is calculated as the inverse of standard deviation of price returns (log normal) over the previous 1-year period. The 25 stocks with the highest percentile score of low volatility are selected for further evaluation.

                Step 4: Composite Factor Scores and Final Selection

                In the previous step up to 100 stocks may be available as contenders for inclusion into the Nifty 500 Multifactor MQVLv 50 Index. Next the composite percentile factor-based score of these stocks is calculated. The 50 stocks that feature the highest composite percentile score based on each factor are eligible for inclusion into the Nifty 500 Multifactor MQVLv 50 Index and by extension included in the portfolio of the Axis Max Life Nifty 500 Multifactor 50 Index Fund.
