What is BMI?

Body Mass Index or BMI is an estimate of a person's leanness or body fat based on their body weight and height, and is designed to assess tissue mass. It is commonly used as a general measure of whether a person's body weight is appropriate for their height.

Specifically, the result derived from the BMI calculation is used to determine whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese, depending on which category the value falls into.

These BMI values vary depending on geography and age, and are often further classified as extremely underweight or very severely obese.

Although BMI is not a perfect estimate of healthy body weight, it may be a helpful tool in determining if further testing or treatment is necessary because being overweight or underweight can have serious health consequences.

What is a BMI Calculator?

The Body Mass Index calculator or BMI calculator is a useful tool that determines your current weight—whether you are overweight, underweight, or just adequate. That said, a persons weight cannot be the sole indicator of their health. A person with a 5.10 ft. height can easily weigh more than one with a 5.5 ft. height.

A BMI calculator takes into account both - the height and weight, to give a better idea. BMI also takes into account geological as well as age factors while calculating. When analyzing a customers application for life insurance and health insurance, BMI is taken into account to understand their health condition to propose an appropriate premium amount.

How to Calculate BMI?

A step-by-step calculation of body mass index requires accurate measurement of height and weight. After correctly measuring them, follow the given steps:

  • Step 1: Multiply your height (H) by itself (H × H).

  • Step 2: Divide your weight (W) by the answer derived in the first step. (W/H2)

The formula to calculate BMI is as follows:

1. International System of Units

In metric unit below is the formula to calculate BMI

BMI = weight (kg)/ height² (m²)

For example, if a man is 1.5 meters tall and weighs 72 kg, then his:

BMI = 72/ (1.5)² = 72 / 2.25 = 32

2. Imperial System

BMI = 703 [weight (lbs) /height² (inches²)

For example, if a woman is 5’2” (62 inches) and weighs 145 pounds, then her BMI would be:

BMI = 703 [145/ (62×62)] = 703 X [145/3844] = 26.5

Note: To avoid unnecessary human errors, you should use an Online BMI calculator for accurate results.

How to Use the BMI Calculator?

It is fairly simple to use the BMI calculator. The following are the few steps required to use BMI calculator:

Step 1: Enter your age, gender, as well as weight and height, using standard or metric measures.

Step 2: Then select "Compute/Calculate BMI" and your BMI will appear below.

Upon entering the above-mentioned data, the calculator will give the following values:

  • Healthy BMI range
  • Healthy weight for this height
  • Action (how much weight to lose/gain to reach the healthy range of BMI)
  • Suggestions to achieve normal BMI

BMI Ranges

There are the five basic ranges within which the BMI calculator results typically range as per the BMI tables scale mentioned above. These are:

  • Underweight = Less than 18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight = 25–29.9
  • Obesity = 30-35
  • Severe obesity = 35 above

Now, lets understand how the BMI changes for men, women and children in the following section

BMI for Men

Lets take a look at the tabular bifurcation of BMI of men and understand how they are placed in the weight category basis their BMI:

BMI Range for Men
Weight Category
Below 18.5
Underweight
18.5 – 24.9
Healthy
25 – 29.9
Overweight
30 – 35
Obese
Above 35
Morbid Obesity

For those above the age of 20 years, the ideal BMI for men ranges from 18.5 to 24.9. If the BMI for men falls below the BMI range of 18.5, they are considered to be underweight and if it goes beyond the higher mark of 24.9, then they are treated under the overweight category.

In both the cases of being underweight or overweight, the person in question is advised to take active steps to move towards the healthy range so as to avoid falling prey to any serious illness.

BMI for Children & Teenagers (5 – 18 years)

Body fat of children changes rapidly as they grow. Since their growth is an ongoing curve, its only wise to adjust the BMI range for children and teens in comparison to the BMI for adults. While in the US, the BMI for children is taken for individuals aged between 2 and 20 years, in India, we do this measurement for individuals falling in the 5-18 years of age range.

The BMI for children in US is considered normal when falling between the 5th and 85th percentile. As per the Indian standards, to define overweight and obesity in children from 5-18 years of age, adult equivalent of 23 and 27 cut-off lines, as presented in the BMI charts (given below), are recommended to be used.

Also, unlike the BMI for adults where theres no demarcation for men and women BMI, the BMI percentiles for children and teenagers are different for boys and girls.

The following charts are used in India for BMI percentile reference in children, with separate charts for girls and boys, viz.:

Keep a weighing scale at home and regularly check your weight. There shouldn’t be sudden changes. In case you notice something awry, the best thing would be to consult your physician.
  • Staying Hydrated: Not getting enough and timely importantly enough hydrating yourself could be secretly harming you without you even realizing. An average human body needs 3 to 4 liters of water on daily basis. It is vital for your heart, muscles and gut health. So, you should consider a small portion preferably a glass of water every 1 or 2 hours.

Limitations of an Online BMI Calculator

While BMI is a standard indicator of ones health status, especially in the field of health insurance and life insurance in India, it isnt a fool-proof system. While many BMI calculators do ask for ones gender and age along with their height and weight, but due to a lack of differential BMI ranges, the BMI result dont reveal the exact picture.

Lets understand the limitations of BMI for adults, children and teenagers as explained below:

  • No Male-Female Division:

A common disadvantage of BMI is that it doesn't take into account whether the person in question is a male or a female. Its basic science that males and females have different levels of body fat necessary for optimum condition of their physical and mental working.

  • No Difference Between Muscle and Fat

When calculating BMI, ones height and weight are considered. It cannot distinguish between the body fat and body muscle leading to not-so-correct calculations. A person who does weight training and has a high-protein diet is going to have more muscles than fat. But BMI calculation cannot cut down the muscle-content from fat resulting in a high BMI of that person.

  • BMI limitation for Children

A childs body is on an ongoing curve. Their BMI can fluctuate significantly because of continuing changes in their height as well as weight. An active child falling low on BMI but it will show them to be underweight, giving a false indication of poor health.

Apart from these, BMI does not consider the role played by ones ethnicity and race on their height and weight. Asians generally have up to 5% more body fat than Caucasians. Similarly, Africans and Afro-Americans touch the height bars higher as compared to Asians and Caucasians. BMI does not take into account these facts.

The risk of diabetes is highest in Asians, followed by African-Americans and Caucasians. This is totally disregarded in the BMI calculations, thus giving half-baked health indicators.

Although the body mass index calculator is an essential tool to calculate body fat, it comes with certain limitations:

Limitations to Diagnose Weight Types Limitations to Assess Health Conditions
  • Body mass index does not differentiate between fat mass and lean body mass. Lean body mass refers to the weight of everything in your body other than fat.
  • A person can have a high BMI if they are muscular but have a very low fat mass. It leads to inaccurate results.
  • Females have more body fat than males. So, a standard BMI chart cannot be used for both genders.
  • The body mass index chart is not adjusted for the increasing average height of adults over the years.
  • Body mass index is not an accurate measure for athletes, bodybuilders, children, pregnant women, and senior citizens.
  • The body mass index calculator does not account for the location and distribution of fat in the body.
  • Excess fat in certain areas of the body, such as the abdomen, can lead to greater health risks than excess fat in other areas, such as the thighs.
  • The relationship between the rate of death and body mass index does not account for factors such as family history of diseases, including diabetes and cancer, or familial lifespan.
  • Certain health conditions can result from other factors, such as the environment and genetics.
  • Inaccurate or False positive body mass index results can lead to unnecessary health-related stress.

Alternate Estimates of Weight-Related Health Risks

Body mass index is not always reliable or accurate. Here are some alternatives for measuring weight-related health risks:

1. Waist Circumference

Waist circumference measures the amount of fat deposited in the abdomen. It can be determined using a measuring tape.

A waist circumference of 35 inches and above in women (34 inches for Asian women) and 40 inches and above in men (36 inches for Asian men) indicates higher abdominal fat. Although it is an easy-to-measure method, there is no standardisation of measurement.

2. Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)

Waist-to-hip ratio is an essential tool to measure abdominal obesity. It can be calculated using the waist circumference and the hip circumference at its widest diameter. Then, the waist measurement is divided by the hip measurement to obtain the accurate waist-to-hip ratio.

A waist-to-hip ratio of 0.86 or higher in women and 1.0 or higher in men indicates high health risks. Meanwhile, a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.80 or lower in women and 0.95 or lower in men indicates a lower risk of health issues.

3. Skinfold Thickness

Skinfold thickness is an alternative measure that provides an analysis of fat beneath the skin at different body sites and estimates total body fat.

It is measured using a special calliper by folding and squeezing the skin and placing the calliper at various locations, such as the trunk, thighs, and back. Then, you need to enter the values derived by the calliper at different online calculators to get the final result.

What is Ponderal Index?

Ponderal Index is another way of measuring ones health, like BMI. However, where BMI calculation only takes into account ones height and weight, Ponderal Index gives much accurate results as it undertakes a persons body mass distribution by including the cubic power of their height. The formula for calculating a persons Ponderal Index is weight/height3.

Also, Ponderal Index for adults is used with different units, i.e. kilograms for weight and meters for height. Similarly, for children it comes with grams and centimeters, for weight and height respectively.

Ponderal Index Formula

The Ponderal Index (PI) formula helps measure the leanness of a human body by dividing your weight by the cube of your height. For children and adolescents, this formula provides a more accurate calculation than a body mass index calculator, as it can capture the changes in body composition due to growth. PI helps classify weight status and assess health risks more precisely in growing individuals.

The PI formula for infants and adults is provided below:

PI formula for infants = (Birth weight (g) × 100) ÷ (Crown heel length (cm))3

PI formula for adults = Ponderal index = Weight (Kg) ÷ (Height (m))3

The ideal PI range for infants is between 2.2 and 3. However, the range for adults is divided into the following categories:

Category Range
Severe Underweight <8
Underweight 8-11
Normal 11-15
Overweight 15-17
Obese ≥ 17

Does BMI Affect Your Health Insurance Premium?

BMI has a crucial role in determining your health insurance premium. Your Body Mass Index (BMI) usually indicates your health condition. Thus, health insurance companies often use a BMI calculator to assess your health risk by simply looking at your BMI.

As a result, the BMI of a policyholder influences their health insurance premium in the following ways:

  • Individuals with Higher BMI

If you have a higher BMI above 24.9, you may develop obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, cardiac issues, hypertension, etc. All these conditions increase the chances of frequent insurance claims. Thus, insurance companies charge a higher premium for those with higher BMIs, considering their health risks.

  • Individuals with Lower BMI

If your BMI is below 18.5, then you have a lower Body Mass Index. A lower BMI also increases the risk of malnutrition-related health issues. Thus, insurance companies charge higher premiums for such policyholders because they face a higher risk of health issues.

  • Individuals with Healthy BMI

Those with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 are considered healthy. Such individuals can negotiate with the insurance company for lower premiums or discounts on health insurance policies.

Having low health risks means their frequency of health insurance claims will be lower. So, the insurance company considers them to have a low-risk profile and charges a lower premium than those with higher BMI.

Knowing how BMI affects your health insurance premium underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy BMI for both financial and health reasons. It also highlights the importance of BMI in healthcare and its impact on policyholders, healthcare providers, and insurers.
