- What does the health insurance cover?
Why Term Insurance is Important?
Health insurance generally covers eligible medical expenses resulting from illness, injury, accident, or hospitalisation, subject to the terms of the policy.
A standard health insurance policy in India can cover expenses such as hospital room rent, doctor’s fees, nursing charges, surgeon fees, operation theatre charges, medicines, diagnostic tests, intensive care unit charges, and other approved hospitalisation expenses.
Most health insurance policies also cover pre-hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation expenses for a specified period.
For example, some tests before hospital admission or follow-up consultations and medicines after discharge may be covered if they relate to the same treatment and meet the policy terms.
Common areas of coverage for health insurance:
- Inpatient hospitalisation: Pays eligible expenses incurred when the insured person is admitted to a hospital.
- Pre-hospitalisation expenses: Covers medical expenses before admission, such as tests, consultations, and medicines, if related to the covered treatment.
- Post-hospitalisation expenses: Covers post-discharge expenses for a specified period.
- Daycare procedures: Covers listed treatments that do not require 24-hour hospitalisation due to medical advancements.
- Ambulance charges: Most policies cover ambulance costs, usually up to a limit specified in the policy document.
- Pre-existing diseases: These are normally covered after the applicable waiting period is over.
- Preventive health check-ups: These may be included, depending on the policy variant.
However, health insurance does not automatically cover all medical bills. Coverage is subject to inclusions, exclusions, waiting periods, room rent limits, co-payment, sub-limits, network hospital rules, and the policy document. In India, the maximum waiting period under a health insurance policy, including for pre-existing diseases, shall not exceed 36 months. So, before buying a policy, it is important to read what is covered, what is excluded, and what becomes payable only after a waiting period.
