How Your ULIP Premium is Utilized

The easiest way to understand how a Unit Linked Insurance Plan premium is used is to follow the money from payment to unit allocation.

• Premium payment: The insurer receives the premium based on the chosen payment frequency.
• Upfront deduction: Where applicable, the premium allocation charge and other applicable deductions are deducted from the premium before the remaining amount is used to purchase units. Some newer online ULIPs have no premium allocation charge. The exact rate appears in the product brochure, policy document, and benefit illustration.
• Unit purchase: The amount remaining after applicable deductions is divided by the applicable NAV to determine the number of units allotted. Units allotted = Net allocable premium ÷ NAV on the allocation date. For example, if ₹98,000 is available and NAV is ₹20, the policy receives 4,900 units.
• Recurring deductions: Recurring charges such as mortality, policy administration, and applicable rider charges may be recovered by cancelling units, depending on the policy terms.
• FMC adjustment: FMC is generally adjusted against the fund’s assets before the NAV is calculated, so its effect is reflected in the NAV rather than deducted separately from the premium or by cancelling a specified number of units. Axis Max Life explains the formula as:


NAV = (Market value of investments + accrued income + other current assets − current liabilities − FMC) ÷ outstanding units.

ULIP premium allocation describes how much of the premium is used to purchase units after applicable deductions. ULIP premium utilization refers to the overall flow of the premium: applicable upfront deductions, the amount used to purchase units, subsequent charges recovered from units or fund assets, and the resulting fund value.

This simplified illustration shows how a ₹1 lakh annual premium may move through a ULIP. It is not a quotation for a particular policy. Actual charges vary by product and policyholder profile.

The allocation charge is an upfront deduction, reducing the amount available to purchase units. In this illustration, the mortality and administration charges are recovered after unit allocation by cancelling units already held; the actual deduction method depends on the policy terms.

A simplified mortality-charge formula is:

Mortality charge = (Mortality rate per ₹1,000 × Sum at Risk) ÷ 1,000

The sum at risk depends on the policy’s death-benefit design and represents the amount of risk covered by the insurer. The applicable mortality rate and calculation method can vary according to the product and policy terms.

An Axis Max Life product prospectus states that mortality charge is deducted monthly by cancelling units and depends on attained age, gender, and sum at risk.

If the NAV subsequently rises from ₹20 to ₹22, the 4,887.5 units would have a notional value of ₹1,07,525 at that point, before any further transactions, charges or market movements. This return is market-linked and not guaranteed. FMC is already reflected in the published NAV, so it should not be deducted again.

The example shows why “₹1 lakh premium” and “₹1 lakh invested” may differ. Some current plans may have a nil premium allocation charge, while certain products may refund specified charges or offer charge-related benefits subject to the policy's terms and conditions.

The following seven charges can affect ULIP premium utilization. Not every plan levies every charge, and rates differ by product.

A current Axis Max Life prospectus illustrates product-level differences: FMC ranges from 0.50% for its discontinuance fund to 1.35% for one fund, while switches and premium redirections are free. Its discontinuance charge also falls by policy year and becomes nil from year five.

ULIP charges can change over the policy term because some charges follow a predefined schedule, while others, such as mortality charges, may vary with factors such as age and sum at risk.

• Policy year 1: In policy year 1, a plan with a premium allocation charge may have a noticeable upfront reduction in the amount available to purchase units. Some products may have a nil allocation charge.
• Policy years 2-4: Any scheduled premium allocation charge may change or cease according to the product's charge schedule. Mortality and administration charges may continue according to the policy terms, while FMC continues to affect the NAV.
• Policy year 5: The five-year lock-in period generally ends after completion of the applicable period. If the policy is discontinued during the lock-in period, applicable discontinuance rules and charges may apply, with the fund value handled according to the policy and regulatory requirements.
• After policy year 5: Once the five-year lock-in period is completed, applicable discontinuance charges generally no longer apply. Premium allocation charges may be nil or may continue according to the product schedule, while recurring charges such as mortality, administration and FMC may continue. Partial withdrawals and fund switches may also be available subject to policy conditions.
• Later policy years: Mortality rates generally increase with age, although the applicable rate and calculation method depend on the product's mortality table and policy terms. Although the applicable mortality rate may increase with age, the actual rupee charge can vary because it is also affected by the sum at risk. For example, if fund growth reduces the sum at risk under the policy's death-benefit formula, the resulting mortality charge may decrease.

A longer holding period can give the investment more time to compound and may reduce the relative impact of one-time or early-period charges, although actual outcomes depend on the product, charges and market performance.

How ULIP premium is utilized depends on the deduction method. A charge taken before allocation reduces the premium available to buy units. A charge recovered through unit cancellation reduces units already held. FMC works through NAV and affects each unit’s value.
