Key Differences Between NPS and PPF

The below table enumerates the key differences between the National Pension System and Public Provident Fund:

                  Feature PPF NPS
Eligibility Any Indian resident; minors via guardians. Indian citizens, NRIs and OCIs aged 18-70.

Option to Customise Allocation No Yes – across equity, bonds, government securities, AIFs
Annuity Purchase at Maturity As you can see, while both are long-term investments and can be used to create a corpus for retirement, there are significant differences between NPS and PPF. Now let’s consider which option may be suitable for your specific financial need.

NPS vs PPF: How to Choose The Ideal Investment Option?

Several factors need to be considered when deciding whether PPF or NPS is better as a financial tool to fund your golden years. Here’s a short list of factors to consider:

                  • First and foremost is risk tolerance of the investor. Since the National Pension System is tied to market fluctuations, it can give you higher returns but also involves more risk. The PPF, on the other hand, is a government-backed scheme that offers secure and stable returns, although this might result in lower returns of PPF versus NPS. So conservative long-term investors might prefer PPF over NPS, while more risk tolerant investors might prefer the opposite.
                  • On the returns side, the NPS has the potential to provide inflation-beating market-linked returns. PPF on the other hand offers predictable returns that may not beat inflation in the long-term. So, investors seeking potentially higher returns over predictability may prefer to invest in NPS versus PPF.
                  • As far as liquidity is concerned, the NPS allows partial withdrawals with restrictions regarding to the usage of money. In the case of PPF, you get the option of loan against PPF after completion of 3 years and up to the 3nd of the 6th year. From the 7th year onwards you can make partial withdrawals subject to applicable terms and conditions.
                  • In terms of tax treatment, both PPF and NPS investments offer tax benefits as long as you have opted for the old tax regime. However, being a EEE instrument, returns and maturity amount from PPF are completely tax-free. However, in the case of NPS, income from annuities are taxable as per the applicable slab rate of the individual.

Also Read: Is PPF Interest Taxable?

Because of the favourable tax treatment available for PPF returns, it is often preferred by investors looking to minimise tax burden. The final decision will ultimately depend on the individual risk appetite, return expectations, and other tax considerations relevant to the individual investor.

What is the National Pension System (NPS)?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a long-term market-linked investment designed to produce a sustainable income after retirement.

                  • 1. It is available to Indian citizens aged between 18 and 70, who may belong to the organised or unorganised, public or private sectors, but not defence employees.
                  • 2. Government and Corporate subscribers need to make periodic mandatory contributions to their pension accounts during their working years. Those opting for the All Citizens NPS model have the flexibility can make contributions based on their financial needs with no maximum limit.
                  • 3. After retirement, participants are allowed to withdraw up to 60% of their accumulated NPS corpus as a lump sum and use the remainder to purchase annuities designed to provide monthly income.
                  • 4. The investments under NPS can be diversified across 4 key asset classes – Equities, Corporate Bonds, Government Bonds and Alternative Investment Funds. The investments are managed by a professional fund manager.

What is Public Provident Fund (PPF)?

Public Provident Fund (PPF), it is a much older, government-backed fixed-return investment product. This fund appeals to individuals because of its long-term investment horizon and predictable returns. Any Indian citizen can invest in a PPF account. One citizen can have only a single PPF account in their name. NRIs and HUFs are not allowed to open a PPF account.

Earlier, it was not possible to close a PPF prematurely. Now you can prematurely withdraw the fund after keeping the PPF active for five years only if:

                  • You are paying for someone’s higher education
                  • Are facing exceptional medical expenses that can be life-threatening
                  • Change in residency status of the account holder on production of a copy of Passport and visa or Income-tax return

The PPF is currently (as of May 2025) offers an interest rate 7.1% p.a. To maximise earnings associated with the deposit, you should deposit funds into the account before the 5th of each month to start interest accrual in the same month.

                  Conclusion

The NPS and PPF are useful instruments for long-term financial planning, but they have differences. The NPS is focused on generating market-linked returns and is intended for retirement-related savings, providing flexibility in investment options, but it also comes with a higher market risk. The PPF is a government-backed scheme with guaranteed returns and is more suited for risk-averse individuals who wish minimize the risk associated with their investment. Choosing between NPS and PPF totally depends on your risk appetite and retirement goals. It is sensible to consider your circumstances when determining which investment option is best suited for you.

                  FAQs

                  search

What are the tax benefits of investing in NPS and PPF?

Investments made in the PPF and NPS qualify for tax benefits under different Section 80C and Section 80CCD only under the old tax regime. Additionally, irrespective of tax regime, interest earned and maturity amount from PPF are exempt from tax.

Can I invest in both NPS and PPF simultaneously?

Yes, you can choose to invest in both plans at the same time, as they are separate investment options.

What is the lock-in period for NPS and PPF?

The PPF has a lock-in of 15 years from the date of account opening. Whereas, NPS investments allow subscribers to withdraw only after the age of 60 years.

How are the returns calculated for NPS and PPF?

PPF offers a fixed rate of returns that the government reviews on a quarterly basis. Whereas, NPS returns are market-linked so dependent on the performance of the equity and bond markets.

What are the withdrawal rules for NPS and PPF?

There are multiple restrictions with respect to partial withdrawals in the case of both NPS and PPF. However, typically, PPF withdrawal rules are allowed in response to a wider range of circumstances as compared to rules for NPS withdrawal.

Can we invest in NPS or PPF without risk?

NPS will likely fluctuate with the stock market, so the investment involves a significant degree of risk. On the contrary, PPF is a government-backed investment that provides fixed returns, so the overall risk is much lower in comparison.

How can I open an NPS or PPF account?

You can open PPF accounts through a post office or through an authorised bank. NPS accounts can be opened through a designated bank or through an online source.
