Debt Mutual Fund Taxation in India

• Short Duration Funds: The money is put into short-term bonds and debt instruments. Short Duration Funds invest in instruments with a portfolio duration of 1 to 3 years.
• Medium Duration Funds: These funds purchase medium-term debt securities and can offer greater return potential with moderate interest risk.
• Corporate Bond Funds: These funds mainly invest in investment-grade corporate bonds issued by businesses. The main goal is to create a stable income.
• Banking and PSU Funds: These funds mainly invest in debt securities issued by banks, public sector undertakings, and public financial institutions.
• Gilt Funds: Invest the money only in government securities. There is no credit risk involved, but these funds are sensitive to interest rate fluctuations.
• Dynamic Bond Funds: These funds actively adjust the maturity profile and duration of their portfolio based on interest rate expectations and changing market conditions.
• Money Market Funds: Invest in short-term instruments such as treasury bills, commercial papers, and certificates of deposit.
• Credit Risk Funds: Focus on the higher-yielding, lower-rated corporate bonds. The credit risk here is on the higher side vis-à-vis most other categories of debt funds.

The taxation on debt mutual funds has changed many times in recent years. Each change has affected investors differently. What matters most now is the date on which the debt fund units were purchased, not how long they were held.
